Victor Grayson shadowed Oliver so subtly he never sensed it—after decades in senior roles he’s a true professional; still, Oliver hasn’t invited anyone over or acted oddly, but Victor knows patience will make him slip, for his intuition never fails.

June 8, 2026 Diary

I have watched Owen Bennett so closely that he never noticed a thing. After all, I have spent more than three decades in the same line of work; Im a professional, after all. Yet nothing untoward has happened yetOwen hasnt ever brought anyone home, and he hasnt behaved suspiciously. Still, I knew I couldnt let him off the hook forever. My instinct told me that, given a little time, he would slip up.

It mattered to me personally, to my family, and to myself. When my daughter Emily was born, I was disappointed that she wasnt a boy. I never showed it, but inside I kept wondering why Id been given a girl instead of a son. Who could I sit down with over a pint and share a proper mans talk when the going got tough? Who would teach her what it meant to be a decent person?

I married late; my job kept me busy, and the long hours didnt endear me to the ladies. Then I met Lucy Hartshe was already nearing forty, so I wasnt dreaming of a new son. The unexpected happened when my little girl stole my heart without me even realising it. The first time she giggled at me and tugged my nose with her tiny hand, I was undone.

One afternoon Emily toddled over, her steps unsure, then suddenly her eyes lit up and she shouted, Dad! Dad! I scooped her up, pressed her close, and in that instant I understood that my greatest priority was her happiness. I vowed never to let her be hurt. She would be my little star, my pride.

Victor, youre spoiling us! Emily would chirp, and Id buy her and her friends little presents, watching the sparkle in their eyes and feeling content.

It seemed to happen overnight that Emily grew up. Not long ago she was clinging to my hand while I walked her to the local nursery in Manchester. She looked up at me with that bright expression and said, Dad, youre huge! Can you buy me a teddy bear? The admiration made me feel invincible. Now shes finished school, signed up for a parttime course, and has taken a job on her ownher own decision about her upbringing. She told me, Dad, its time I stand on my own two feet. At work Ill learn fast, no point wasting time. I felt a swell of pride at my clever, independent daughter.

Lucy baked a pie one evening, eyes twinkling like shed discovered a secret treasure. I wondered if the girls were planning to buy me something or ask for a favour, but it turned out to be something entirely different. Emily had just turned twenty.

Dad, she smiled, flicking an invisible speck of dust from my shirt, I want you and Mum to meet someone. Dont get hotheaded. Owen is very kind; were thinking of making a formal request. Ive invited him over for tea today. Oh, theres his call now!

Lucy was the first to answer the door. Good evening, come in, its a pleasure, she greeted Owen, Im Lucy Hart. And this is my husband, Victor Gray. I nodded, shook Owens hand, and felt my throat go dry.

The thought crossed my mind: this man was here to whisk my daughter away, to take the only girl Ive ever loved away from my house. Another voice, the voice of reason, whispered, What do you want, Victor? Dont you want your daughter to be happy? Hes a good man, stronghanded, and shell be with both mum and dad for life, wont she?

I ignored the sensible voice. I decided Owen was unworthy of Emily; that was final. A plan formed in my head: I would test this man, I would not let anyone hurt my child.

Weeks passed. I waited outside Owens flat, sitting in my work car, using late meetings as an excuse. Whenever Owen walked Emily home, I trailed silently, trying to gauge his character.

At last, I saw a young woman approach Owens building with a small child in tow. She handed him a handbag, the child clutching her hand, and they disappeared inside. I was convinced Owen was hiding something. Yet, the more I watched, the more I realized the girl was simply his sister, looking after a niece.

When Emily finally told me, Dad, our wedding is in a week! Weve booked a café with Owen, my chest tightened. I stared at my daughter, unsure what to do. Embarrassment flushed my faceI had been spying on my own daughters fiancé. She went on, Dad, Owens parents will arrive tomorrow evening to meet us. Theyll stay with him for the night. Tonight his sister Natalie will come with her daughter; her husband is away on business, but hell join later.

The wedding day arrived. I danced with Lucy as if we were still in our youth. I finally decided that endless suspicion served no purpose; I would no longer mix work with family.

A year later Emily gave birth to a grandson, Samuel. I, an old man now, wept with joy. My dreams had materialised: I finally had a man to talk shop with, and a soninlaw who turned out to be a genuinely decent fellow. Samuel is growing fast, shouting Granddad! at the top of his lungs, and I cant keep up with his energy. Life feels bright again.

I never told anyone about the months I spent tailing Owen. Some secrets are best kept within the family, where trust is earned, not imposed.

**Lesson learned:** Trusting those you love beats the constant suspicion of a watchful eye. By letting go of doubt, I found peace for myself and a brighter future for my family.
